OUR STORY
PARDON US IF WE GET A BIT PASSIONATE ABOUT OUR FOOD
Our menu and recipes are inspired by the people that raised us. Our barbecue and sides are a tapestry of sense-memory from the South. In Welcome, NC (just north of Lexington) “Sunday Supper” happens at lunchtime. It takes place somewhere between church, and an afternoon spent climbing trees and fishing. There are two picnic tables loaded up with scratch-made BBQ, chicken pies, mac n’ cheese, slaw, hot pickles, devilled eggs and greens.
The kids pile the pulled pork high on the bun, load some slaw on top of that, then sit on the ground to listen to the adults.
That’s where the traditions get passed, in the shade of a pine tree, with a plate of food in your lap, watching the older folks laugh, whittle and tell stories about people you never met. The food is important because it tethers us to the community, family and traditions that form us.
Somewhere along the way we became the adults, the ones making the food while the kids play in yard, the ones telling stories. And these traditions, born central North Carolina, found their way into our kitchens in Charlottesville. This is the community that raised us, and this is the place where we started our own families.
If you’ve read this far, it’s no surprise that we seized the opportunity to buy Big Jim’s BBQ, the Charlottesville institution that has been serving this community for three decades. When you come from here, you don’t pass that up. We started this company as a tribute to our community, family and traditions. It’s not about the food, but really, it’s all about the food.
